My achievements to date.
I am currently in my final year of a diagnostic radiography course at Queen Margaret’s University. During my course I have worked in many hospitals, as both a student and an auxiliary bank nurse, and gained a wealth of experience in all aspects of radiography and patient care. Throughout this time I have demonstrated that I am equally at home working on my own or as part of a team. I have excellent communication skills and connect extremely well with patients. I am fully capable of working under my own initiative and have had to think outside the box on numerous occasions in order to provide the best patient care possible. During my many placements I have become adept at prioritising workloads, evaluating images, advising clinicians, utilising PACS and adhering to local protocols.
During my course at QMU I was asked to take part in an open day as a student representitive of the Diagnostic Radiography Team tasked to promote the course to potential student radiographers and to help answer questions about the role of a radiographer.
My job as a bank nurse and student radiographer has also given me experience in the mental and physical demands of the job, some of these being patients with poor prognosis, and patients receiving bad news. I am flexible enough to work at various sites which requires a broad skillbase and having to adapt to using different pieces of equipment and to working in new situations. This also requires the ability to communicate with staff in many areas to help the daily management of the department. These experiences have given me a good understanding of clinical governance and department policies.
I pride myself on having enthusiasm, great communication skills and a desire to maintain the high standards associated with a good radiographer.
As a student radiographer I have adapted well to using many different pieces of equipment and to working in new situations. While working as both a student and an assistant in various departments I have quickly learnt to manage an unpredictable work load and interact with fellow health care workers. These experiences have also allowed me to enhance my communications skills by providing reassurance to patients and carers visiting the department. I am fully capable of caring for patients who have difficulty communicating or who are anxious, and dealing with patients who are aggressive.
My job as a bank nurse and student radiographer has also given me excellent experience in the daily management of the departments and a good understanding of clinical governance and department policies.

Abilities / Skills
I am a mother of two daughters, who are 15 and 22 years old. I have brought up my daughters on my own for the past 14 years and only now do I feel I can achieve my lifelong ambition of becoming a radiographer. In the past, financial pressures have always prevented me from taking this step and I have had to work to provide for the girls and myself, now however I feel I can do both. I have always had at least one job and managed to support my children. Daily tasks for me consist of looking after my children and partner as well as taking care of my elderly mother.
At the moment I am in my last year at University which has been a long and difficult journey which started five years ago with an access to nursing course. Over the period of the five years I have had various work placements including one in the local hospice. This experience gave me both great satisfaction and more patient understanding.
I have also had a variety of jobs which have had a position of responsibility and involved dealing with the general public from which I get great satisfaction. This proved invaluable in my radiography course as it provided me with good level of life experience.
I have always been a well organised person and I love organising events, I was once involved in organising a ceilidh for Granada TV where I had to find and book a band, make outfits and arrange enough food for 40 people. Being involved in challenging tasks and paying particular attention to detail and making sure everything is done correctly is part of my everyday routine. This is carried through to my home life, as part of my daily routine consists of making sure everyone is organised for their day.
